Mixed Bag of Fishing at Shady Camp NT

Plenty of fish to choose from this April at Shady Camp, barra caught mainly in the mouth, Tommycut and Sampan. Brett, Shayne and Brenton spent 4 days guided fishing with Scott and had a great look around, they enjoyed a catch of goldies and barra. Goldies caught again out on the reef with a beautiful day for the kids, calm water and plenty of fish, the fish were being hooked before the bait even hit the bottom, the kids loved it.

Steve, Red and Shaun enjoyed an eventful week away this March, rain, hail and shine they fished for barra. Trawling Tommycut Mouth endlessly for Big Barra, as you can see they got lucky quite a few time. Their trip was before the cyclone mid March so they really worked hard.

Jay takes a great dive for Humbug

I have just witnessed the most hilarious and yet bravest thing I have seen in a while. Just picked up Jay Viney for few days fishing with Scott, as the usual roads to Shady Camp are closed due to the recent cyclone, we organised to pick Jay up at Leaders Creek for a bit of a water adventure back to Tommycut Creek. I was just pointing out to Jay about the croc trap that is always there when Scott arrived. Me being the useless female after loading everything on the boat, asked for Scott to drive the car back up the boat ramp because the thought always worries me. He happily agreed and said to Jay to hold the boat and off he went. Well Jay must have a concentration span similar to mine and of course within a few moments we were chatting, and then both realised that we had forgotten Scotts words of instruction “Jay hold the boat” and noticed the boat had drifted off away from the ramp by a few meters. Well Jay jumped into action and quickly emptied his pockets of his valued I phone and flipped off his thongs and took a giant dive for the side railings of Humbug boat, it was awesome dive, he sprawled himself into the water from head to toe, it was a great effort only a few meters from the croc trap I had just pointed out to him, but then the funniest thing when he stood up he was only in less that a foot of water. This photo was taken a few minutes later with Jay dripping wet and Scott with his back to the camera laughing his guts out. Well done Jay!

Our good mate Ruebin, caught this awesome barra measuring exactly 1 metre at Shady Camp, trawling the mouth of Sampan last Sunday 11th March. He was trawling the mouth with a green Scorpian lure, when this monster barra grabbed on. He didn’t catch much else for day except a few smaller barra and some good size salmon, but he wasn’t too bothered, he’d caught his first Metery!

Plenty of wild pigs at Shady Camp this season

Had a great weekend chasing barra at the mouth of Tommycut Creek, Shady Camp. While the barra were a bit slow for us, the pigs were on mass. Spent a quick half an hour watching these pigs ploughing up the bank, there would have been about 30-40 in this heard, the second lot we saw for the weekend. The first heard were at the Dead Forest and this lot were just by where the Motherboat Yarramundi is moored. Our kids decided to get a bit closer and had fun getting covered in the mud. Some pretty big barra were caught this weekend but with the lack of runoff you had to work for them. But this are definitely on the improve, with plenty of rain over the weekend. Mary River Camping ground was under water on my return and water over the road at Scott Creek. Had a beautiful feed of fresh warm mud crab, steamed in salt water, YUM!

Tim, Boof and the boys decide they are going to get their own muddies ready for the pot. Listen to them carry on, it’s hilarious.

Once they finally get them in the pot a really good receipe for chilli mudcrabs we like to use is:

all in the pot, Onion, Chilli, Garlic, Ginger til soft

add broken up crabs

add fish sauce (little), sweet chilli sauce (more) soy sauce (little) to taste

Cook in pot till crabs ready to eat (turns orange is you best hint!)

Then enjoy, mudcrabs are delicious any way you cook em and always
