Fish the Mary River System (Shady Camp)
Discover the Mary River System with Humbug Fishing.
A sought-after destination for barramundi fishing, Shady Camp lies where freshwater meets saltwater in the Mary River. Following the monsoonal rains of the tropical wet season, this area becomes a mecca for big barramundi.
Shady Camp in Mary River National Park, located about 200km from Darwin, is accessible by car in approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes (4WD only during the wet season). It offers two main rivers for fishing: the Sampan and Tommycut Creeks.
The area is especially popular between March and May during the “run-off” period when the Mary River is filled with big barramundi and plenty of crocodiles.
Our Fishing Charters cater for fishing enthusiasts at all levels
Beyond barramundi, Shady Camp offers a rich variety of fish species. Anglers can target threadfin salmon, mangrove jack, golden snapper, and black jewfish. The tidal influence creates dynamic fishing conditions, with both saltwater and freshwater species coexisting.
As you cast your line, keep an eye out for saltwater crocodiles in the area!
Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a beginner, Shady Camp promises an unforgettable fishing experience in the heart of the NT.
