Fish the Mary River System (Shady Camp)
Barra country, Mary River
Shady Camp sits in the Mary River system, where the Sampan and Tommycut Creeks meet, roughly 200 kilometres and a 1 hour 40 minute drive from Darwin. It is one of the Top End’s best-known Barra runoff destinations, March to May.
Is Shady Camp Humbug Fishing's runoff destination?
Daly River is Humbug Fishing’s first choice for the Barra runoff season. Shady Camp comes into the itinerary when river conditions rule Daly River out, which happens only occasionally, typically once every five years or so due to cyclone damage. From June onwards, once the runoff season ends, Shady Camp remains a solid option for a mixed bag of species.
Shady Camp itself has a strong reputation among barra fishermen for good reason. The Mary River here runs through the transition zone where fresh water meets salt water, and the runoff season draws big barramundi through the system in numbers.
What fish are in the Shady Camp system?
Barramundi is the headline species, particularly during the runoff. Beyond barra, the tidal mix of fresh and salt water supports threadfin salmon, mangrove jack, golden snapper, and black jewfish. Saltwater crocodiles are present throughout the system, as they are across most Top End waterways.
Where exactly is Shady Camp?
Shady Camp sits within the Mary River system, roughly 200 kilometres and a 1 hour 40 minute drive from Darwin by road, accessible by 4WD only during the wet season. The fishery covers two main waterways, the Sampan and Tommycut Creeks, where freshwater and saltwater conditions meet.
How does booking work?
- Get in touch and lock in your dates. Call or email with your preferred dates and group size. Our team will advise on the best tides and the best location for what you want to catch.
- We sort everything. Once your booking is confirmed, we handle the provisions, gear, logistics, and hotel transfers from Darwin.
- Fish where the season takes you. Daly River is our first choice for the runoff. If conditions call for it, Shady Camp is a strong Top End fishery in its own right.
Charters during the wet season may be redirected between these locations depending on weather and river conditions. Safety determines the itinerary.
