Daly River, roughly 2.5 hours southwest of Darwin, is Humbug Fishing’s most booked liveaboard charter region. It is the operator’s first choice for the Barra runoff season, which runs from March to May, when big tides draw barramundi through the Daly-Reynolds floodplain system.
Why is Daly River the top choice for the Barra runoff?
Barramundi fishing in the Top End is built around tides, not luck. During the runoff, big tides push barramundi out of the flood plains and into the main river channels, and Daly River is where Humbug Fishing sends the majority of runoff-season charters.
The Daly-Reynolds floodplain system has the largest catchment area of any major freshwater floodplain system in the Northern Territory. The Daly River itself runs more than 40 kilometres from the Daly River crossing to its confluence with Anson Bay, a stretch marked by snags, sandbars, S-bends, creeks, and rock bars. Anson Bay and its coastal floodplains take in the Peron Islands, tidal flats, and Docherty’s Creek.
Mad keen fishermen know the runoff window and book early. There are only two tide cycles in a given month suited to the runoff, and the season itself only runs for three months. Missing the right tide window on the wrong river can mean a week of quiet fishing rather than a week of barramundi.
What does a typical charter at Daly River look like?
Fishing follows the tide, not the clock. During the big tides of the runoff, the focus is barramundi. On the off tide, the same charter shifts to reef and pelagic species, so no two days on the water fish the same way.
You fish from Starfire’s tenders, both in survey, launched directly from the mothership rather than a boat ramp. There is no queue, no curfew, and no drive back to shore at the end of the day. The surrounding floodplains and coastal wetlands carry heavy birdlife and wildlife, on top of the fishing itself.
What happens if conditions change?
Charters during the wet season may be redirected to alternative locations depending on weather and river conditions. Safety determines the itinerary. In most years, Daly River is accessible throughout the runoff season. On the rare occasion cyclone damage rules it out, typically no more than once every five years, charters are redirected to Shady Camp for the remainder of the runoff.
